3 types of hyperpigmentation

01. Age spots

This type of hyperpigmentation is not related to age in the sense that you must be a certain age in order to experience this type of hyperpigmentation. It occurs due to unprotected sun exposure why it is typically more mature people, who experience this type of pigmentation. Symptoms of age spots, which are also referred to as sun-spots, are brown or tanned spots appearing on sun-exposed areas of the skin.

02. Melasma

This type of hyperpigmentation is due to hormonal changes and occurs mostly for pregnant women or women who are taking birth control pills. Symptoms of melasma are large patches of darkened skin surrounded by a normal skin tone.

03. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

This type of hyperpigmentation is a result of an injury on the skin causing an increase of melanin in order to heal the wound and protect the skin. It typically occurs after an inflammatory condition such as acne or rosacea and it is shown as spots or patches of darkened skin.

04. A combination of the three

Pigmentation in the skin does not only have to be one of the three. It can be all three types of pigmentation, leading to your skin to look hyperpigmented.

FAQ – Hyperpigmented skin

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation can be described as discolouration in the skin. It is shown as darkened or brown patches on your skin, making your skin texture and tone appear uneven.

Why do I have pigmentation?

It is usually a completely harmless condition caused by skin cells producing too much melanin. Melanin is the pigment adding colour to your skin, hair and eyes. It is mostly caused by unprotected sun exposure, ageing, or skin injuries. As well as experiencing an increase in melanin production it is also possible to experience a decrease leading to hypopigmentation.

How to care for hyperpigmented skin?

Pigmentation can occur in both young and older skin. Skincare products with the active ingredients niacinamide, vitamin C or azelaic acid are especially caring for hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C is one of the hero ingredients in our Glowing Serum, which will help reduce dark spots improving the brightness of the skin and ensuring your skin texture appears more even.
